What I’ve learned in travel is that sometimes you just have to go with the flow. Every once in awhile, you come across unique experiences that you may not always have to deal with back home. We recently had some unique experiences visiting nude beaches with kids. Yup, you heard that right, NUDE beaches!
Stumbling upon a nude beach in Mexico
Nudity at beaches is not always common in Mexico. So far, at the beaches we’ve visited in Mexico, people are dressed in bathing suits. But some beaches in Mexico are more tolerant of nudity. We recently visited friends of ours who were staying in Playa Zipolite, about an hour and a half southeast of Puerto Escondido. And we happened to spend an afternoon at a nude beach in Mexico.
Our friends warned us ahead of time that this would be the case. It seems Zipolite is popular among Europeans (who don’t have a problem with nude swimming) and hippies. Many of the beach goers at Zipolite enjoy swimming and sunbathing in the buff. And, as it turns out, we also happened to be visiting Zipolite at the same weekend as a nudist festival. So the beach was crawling with nudists looking for a unique vacation experience in Mexico.
Discussing nudity with kids
Some families may have an issue with exposing their kids to these types of unique experiences. For us, though, visiting nude beaches with kids was an opportunity for learning. We don’t shy away from discussing nudity with kids. And we don’t try to objectify or demonize what people choose to do with their bodies. Instead, we give them a chance to see that there are many different ways of personal expression, and nudity is one of them.
In all honesty, our kids couldn’t care less about being around naked bodies. All they were concerned about was playing in the waves and building sand castles. Being on a nude beach in Mexico did not seem to bother them at all.
Lessons from visiting nude beaches with kids
As I mentioned earlier, in travel, you just have to go with the flow. Especially when you come across unique experiences like the one we had in Zipolite. When you’re visiting nude beaches with kids, you can help normalize the situation by downplaying the novelty of seeing naked bodies. One thing I’ve learned from having kids is that if you don’t make a big deal about something, they won’t make a big deal about it either. Our kids take behavioral cues from us. They learn to go with the flow when they see us go with the flow.
Have you had some unique vacation experiences from your travels? Maybe it’s not quite as crazy as swimming in nude beaches with kids, but I’m sure you’ve encountered your own wacky and unique experiences with your kids. Share them with me in the comments!
